1) PREMISE:

Marriage in modern technological societies is not a purely religious affair, but also includes numerous civil benefits.

2) PREMISE:

In the United States the government is prohibited from conducting religious ceremonies.

3) FROM 1 AND 2 IT FOLLOWS THAT:

The religious and civil aspects of marriage must be separated to avoid constitutional problems.

4) PREMISE:

Homosexuals are not denied citizenship in the USA.

5) FROM 3 AND 4 IT FOLLOWS THAT:

The civil aspects of marriage cannot be denied to any US citizen due to the 14th Amendment the relivant portion of which states: "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States" Thus homosexual citizens may not be denied civil benefits granted to hetrosexual citizens.
